Except for rare circumstances, a memorabilia piece from 2007 will not be worth as much as one from 1957. Older pieces tend to be worth much more, especially if they are from iconic movies that generations have grown to love and adore. Not only that, but older pieces are generally harder to get, which also raises their value. If you have a newer piece, then it might be worthwhile to hold onto it for a few years or even decades. What is worth $10 now might be $10,000 later.

Condition
This isn’t unique to movie memorabilia, but it is still worth noting. Condition often plays a major role in determining value. While some incredibly unique pieces may still be worth a lot even if they are beat up, generally pristine pieces with little to no wear marks are really worth a lot. Luke Skywalker's actual lightsaber used in the first two Star Wars movies recently fetched $24,000. A Skywalker lightsaber from New Hope recently brought in $200,000.

Note: Anything Luke Skywalker related tends to be worth the big bucks.Luke Skywalker’s flight suit used in both Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back recently went for $60,000 at auction. Similar suits from the movies range from $15-20,000, but often go for much more once the bidding heats up.

2. Darth Vader Helmet and Related Accessories

Luke Skywalker may be the good guy in the Star Wars saga, but Darth Vader's got the cool gear. A Darth Vader helmet, mask and shoulder armor set used in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back recently earned $70,000 at auction. In 1992, Lucasfilm Limited had the Vader stuff reassembled and placed in a Plexiglass container. Clearly, the makers of the movies are aware of the value of these items. An original Darth Vader costume from Empire Strikes Back, a jet-black helmet, mask and armor, is valued at $250,000. Proving that there is interest in all things Vader, the character's lightsaber from Empire recently sold for $100,000 at auction. Most lightsabers from the original trilogy are highly popular items.

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Cloak

The last of the Jedi Knights wasn't a great warrior, but a nomadic monk in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. A recent cloak based on original conceptual designs by famed Star Wars costume creator Ralph McQuarrie recently brought in nearly $96,000 at auction. The cloak was also used in The Empire Strikes Back. The cloak has special meaning since it is the only that remains after his iconic battle with the evil Darth Vader in New Hope. Speaking of Obi-Wan, the wise one's lightsaber used by Ewan McGregor in the Phantom Menace is set to go to auction in London and is expected to fetch $20,000 or more.

4. Chewbacca Head

One of the most recognizable sidekicks in movie history, Chewbacca items are in demand among Star Wars collectors. Five identical costumes were worn by Peter Mayhew, who played the lovable furball. Each costume is made of yak hair with a touch of mohair. The only visible sign of Mayhew was his blue eyes. One of the five heads recently went for $100,000 at auction. No word on what happened to the other four costumes, but they will likely fetch a pretty penny when and if they hit the auction block.

5. Han Solo’s Blaster

Originally featured in Return of the Jedi, Han Solo's blaster sold for $180,000 in 2007. A similar blaster is available on eBay for $800. It is not identified as one of the originals, but claims to be from the Star Wars franchise. To date, the blaster is the most sought-after of the Han Solo-related Star Wars items from the original trilogy. Those looking for less-expensive items can find vintage Han Solo lunchboxes for under $50.

While each of these items ranks among the most valuable of all Star Wars memorabilia on the market, the record for the most expensive Star Wars-related item was set just last year. The original Panavision PSR 35mm camera George Lucas used during early principle photography for New Hope recently sold at auction for $625,000, a huge markup from the estimated value of $200,000. For many Star Wars fans, certain Star Wars items are almost priceless - almost.

Often imitated but never quite surpassed, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a classic comedy about a topic still as current now as it was in the 1940s. Silly but very funny, this movie is really great - featuring the ever hilarious Cary Grant, and Myrna Loy. Essentially, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is about a family that decides to move to the country and get away from the overcrowding in the apartment. Instead of making life easier, however, their decision to move causes disaster after disaster. This movie is a hilarious example of how whatever can go wrong will!

Although the topic could have easily degenerated into stupidity, the script, the directing and, most of all, the cast, turn the movie into a classic. The script is witty and very funny, and it is directed with style - but mainly, Cary Grant is terrific! His double takes and reactions will never be equalled...any scene that he is in in pretty much guaranteed to be hysterical. Myrna Loy does a good job of cooling balancing Grant's screwball character, and the supporting cast is good as well.

Anyhow, this is a funny movie for the whole family - it is highly recommended!

By James L. - Cary Grant and Myrna Loy have a very comfortable chemistry together in this comedy about a couple that decides to get out of their cramped city apartment and move out into the country. Through stubborness and sheer ignorance, they end up making a number of expensive errors as they attempt to build their dream house. The story is narrated by their friend and lawyer Bill, well played by Melvyn Douglas, a cynical man who learns it's easier to just let them make their mistakes. Grant is the perfect actor to express the exasperation of the whole process. The man had amazing comedic timing, deceptively making it look easy. The script hits all of the potential problems with building, and the film is smoothly produced. This is the kind of comedy that will appeal to most people, because almost everyone has had the opportunity to experience the joy that is remodelling, landscaping, decorating, or building. There's something in here for everyone to appreciate.

Holiday (1938)-This movie is one of the four Cary Grant/Katherine Hepburn movies but not their best. Many prefer the The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby, which say are the couples best. This film is quite wonderful, touching and funny, with sweet tender moments. The movie is set around New Year's , with Cary playing Johnny Case engaged to Kate's black sheep millionaire heiress.

The Awful Truth (1937)- Is a romance and comedy, starring Irene Dunne in which was an Oscar-nominated performance as the Cary's almost-divorced wife. Both Dunne and Cary were planning to remarry, although their crazy antics may end up ruining both of their plans. Nominated for Best Picture Oscar and winner of Best Director for Leo McCarey. The film was also nominated for Screenplay and Supporting Actor for Ralph Bellamy as Irene's new love interest), this is one of the best comedies of all.

The Talk of the Town (1942)-Directed by George Stevens featuring Jean Arthur who is really very funny and Ronald Colman starring as a law professor in line for the Supreme Court. It was nominated for 7 Oscars, including Picture, Original Story, and Screenplay. Grant has recently escaped from prison and is staying with Jean Arthur, while Colman is already a guest.

"The problem with some DVD box sets is that there's usually a film or two included that you could very well do without or perhaps would not even like in your film collection. No such problem with the simply named "The Cary Grant Box Set" which includes five movies that are all among Grant's very best. That alone makes this a must-have for Grant fans.

So the featurettes, the vintage replica movie postcards and the overall attractive packaging are bonuses -- significant ones at that.

The films feature such wonderful leading ladies as Jean Arthur (twice) Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne and the incomparable Katherine Hepburn. Hepburn appears in "Holiday" directed by George Cukor, a depression era film that skewers the upper class. Grant plays Johnny Case an up and coming young business man who thinks more of exploring life than of making money. He finds himself in love with the daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur but it is soon obvious that he has more in common with the girl's sister. Lew Ayers turns in a memorable performance as the brother, a philosophizing drunk.

"Only Angels Have Wings" offers a very different Grant, this time playing a the leader of a crew of daring mail pilots in South America. Here Jean Arthur is the love interest though a lovely young Rita Hayworth offers competition. Thomas Mitchell is part of a stellar cast directed by the great Howard Hawks.

"Talk of the Town" is to me one of the most underrated films of all time. Grant is Leopold Dilg a labor activist framed for a factory bombing. After escaping from jail he hides out in the bucolic summer home of an old childhood friend played by Jean Arthur. The catch is that she's renting the home to one of America's leading legal minds a supreme court candidate played by Ronald Coleman. There is comedy, the inevitable romance and a good deal of politics in this surprisingly thought provoking film directed by George Stevens.

Grant is again directed by Hawks but this time in a classic screwball comedy in "His Girl Friday." This remake of "Front Page" introduced the concept of rapid fire overlapping dialogue, principally between Grant and co-star Russell who play a former husband and wife team that doubled as a newspaper reporting dynamic duo. Grant would like them back together again but Russell and a would-be second husband played by Ralph Bellamy have other ideas. Grant is diabolical and hilarious as he manipulates events around a forthcoming execution in an effort to get the girl and the story.

Among the laughs, "His Girl Friday" also has a points to make about corruption, media and justice.

"The Awful Truth" starring Grant and Dunne is straight screwball as the two stars play a divorcing married couple that maybe doesn't really want to separate. Leo McCarey directed this fast paced romp, poor old Ralph Bellamy is again Grant's hapless foil.

In the unlikely event I'm sent to a desert island that has a DVD player and can only bring a few DVD sets, this one is coming with me. In any event this box set should find itself on the the shelves of any Cary Grant fan."

Five Hollywood Western Classics Not To Be Missed-Author: Carl DiNello- Hollywood Western Classics have always been favorites of mine. While the western is not as popular today as it once was (although, there has been a bit of renewed interest), any younger film fan who omits the western genre from their area of movie interest will have truly missed out on some great motion pictures. The western is far more than the "horse opera" as some would describe it. So, to all of you western deprived young movie-fans, here are some classic Hollywood westerns from the 1920s-1950s that you owe it to yourself to view.

The Wind was released in 1928 and was a silent film. Directed by Victor Sjöström, it is based on Dorothy Scarborough's novel 'The Wind', and was filmed entirely in the Mohave Desert. The story is about Letty, played by silent screen legend Lillian Gish. The role of Letty proved to be one of the finest parts in her very distinguished career. Letty originates from Virginia and leaves for Texas to live with her cousin and his family. The punishing winds and sand of West Texas only seem to punctuate her unwelcome reception. What follows is a tragic marriage, the threat of rape, murder, and madness.

Released in 1939, director John Ford's Stagecoach became not only a classic western, but proved to provide the breakthrough role for a young actor named John Wayne. Stagecoach, filmed on location in Monument Valley, Arizona, documents the perilous journey of a group of strangers aboard a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory. A classic western with a combination of strong characterizations, drama, action, and humor, Stagecoach is considered to be one of the most influential films of all time.

In 1948, the film adaptation of B. Traven's novel 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' made its debut. Directed by John Huston, this western movie has often been referred to as "movie-making at its best". It tells the story of two down and out American's (Humphrey Bogart, and Tim Holt) in 1920s Mexico who meet and join up with an old gold prospector (Walter Huston) on an ill-fated treasure hunt to the Sierra Madre Mountains. Their friendship turns out to be short-lived as the greed for gold corrupts the mind of Bogart's character Dobbs eventually turning each man against the other. A great depiction of greed and irony.

1952's High Noon is considered by many to be the greatest classic western ever filmed. This is not your typical western. Having little in the way of violence, High Noon is both exciting and suspenseful. This film portrays emotional and moral soul-searching, centering around one mans courage in the face of extreme danger.

Telling the story of newly married and retired Town Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper), the story revolves around death threats made by outlaw Frank Miller after being arrested and sent to prison by Marshall Kane. With Miller's gang having showed up in town and Miller due on the noon train, Kane must now decide whether to stay and fight, or leave town with his new bride (Grace Kelly) before Miller arrives for the fateful showdown. A true adult western classic with a great theme song (Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin') sung by Tex Ritter.

John Ford has directed a number of great westerns, but none is more worthy of recognition than his 1956 film The Searchers. Based on Alan Le May's novel 'The Seachers,' which was itself based on a real-life incident, this films popularity has risen over time to the point where it is considered to be one of the best westerns ever made. It is the story of aging and bitter Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards (John Wayne). A Comanche raid has murdered his brother and sister-in-law, his nephew, and abducted his two nieces Lucy, and Debbie. It is this tragic act that serves as the beginning of a search that will go on for five years. Before long, Ethan finds the murdered body of his niece Lucy.

Along with his brother's adopted half-breed son Martin (Jeffrey Hunter) the search continues for the remaining niece. Ethan's hate for the Comanche and what they have done is matched by the hate Comanche Chief Scar feels for all whites. After finding out that during her years spent with the Comanche, his niece Debbie has been raised as an Indian and married Chief Scar, Ethan now decides rather than rescue her he must kill her.

Regardless of a persons age, these top Hollywood Western Classics should not be missed by anyone who loves movies and movie history.

Marilyn Monroe Urban Legends-Author: Robert Palmer- There is no doubt that Marilyn Monroe is a screen legend. One cannot achieve the levels of fame and stardom that she did in their life time without having certain myths and urban legends associated with their history. The three most common urban legends about Marilyn Monroe, her dress size, her extra toe and her sex film are all false. Marilyn Monroe's dress size seems to spark quite a bit of controversy simply because she was considered a sex goddess for her time. In fact she was voted sexiest person of the 20th century by Playboy Magazine. Actress Elizabeth Hurley recently remarked about Marilyn Monroe that she was overweight, repeating the often quoted dress size of 16 saying, "I've always thought Marilyn Monroe looked fabulous, but I'd kill myself if I was that fat,'' she told Allure magazine. The fact is that dress sizes have not remained consistent over the years. Since most of Marilyn Monroe's dress were tailor made to fit her it is hard to get an accurate reading as to what dress size she would be wearing today. However for a women that was 5 ft. 5 inches tall and weighed between 118 and 140 pounds Marilyn would most likely wear a size 12 by todays standards. Some of the confusion may stem from the fact that an American dress size of 12 is actually a British dress size of 16.

The myth of Marilyn Monroe's extra toe comes from a photograph early in her career taken at Zuma Beach in California. On March 18, 1946 Photographer Joe Jasgur shot pictures of the then 20 year old Norma Jean Baker, later known as Marilyn Monroe. In one of the shots the sand clumps up next to her toe and it appears as if she has six toes on her left foot.

It is from this single picture that this urban legend has spread. However photos by the same photographer at the same beach taken only five days later clearly show that she had five toes on each foot. Indeed there are many other pictures of her feet taken throughout her career, both before and after this photo which clearly show no extra appendages.

Also a sixth toe would have been noted on either her birth certificate, death certificate or autopsy report. None of the above indicates an extra toe.

The longest running rumor or urban legend includes a supposed film reel involving the young Marilyn Monroe before she became famous engaged in sex acts.

The story goes that allegedly the FBI came into possession of a 15 minute reel of 16mm film showing the young Marilyn Monroe performing oral sex on an unidentified man.

The story of the sex movie recently resurfaced when a copy was allegedly sold for $1.5 million dollars to a New York businessman who claimed he wanted the film kept under wraps. However the rumor seems to come from Keya Morgan, a memorabilia collector who is coincidentally releasing a Marilyn Monroe documentary at the same time.

Morgan has thus far refused to disclose the names of either the buyer or seller of the alleged sex film and has not been able to provide a single piece of evidence that this alleged sale ever even occurred.

It is unfortunate that these kinds of stories cloud the achievements of the blonde bombshell. For her fans, these obviously false rumors can never tarnish the life of this screen legend.

Hollywood Memories: A Few Must See Film Classics by Carl DiNello- Some people feel that there are few real Hollywood classics made these days. While this is not necessarily true, it does seem as though they are a little harder to come by. Today's advanced technology has certainly made films that are visually very appealing, but many of the story lines are merely copies of, or modified versions of the originals. One of the most appealing factors in the makeup of old movie classics is the fact that a great many were indeed 'original'. Here are a few suggestions for Hollywood classics (there are many more) that should be viewed by all movie fans who may have missed them, and for those who would love to see them again.

Gone with the Wind was released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming and is a classic of epic proportions. A film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, it stared some of the biggest names in film history. Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland helped propel Gone with the Wind to 10 Academy Awards. It has sold more tickets in the United States than any other film in history. In AFI's 2007 list of the top 100 American Films of all time it is ranked number 6, and is considered one of the most enduring symbols of Hollywood's Golden Age.

The unforgettable and timeless Casablanca was released in 1942 and has enjoyed increased popularity every year since its release. Featuring a strong international cast led by Humphrey Bogart (in his first romantic lead role), Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, Austrian actor Paul Henreid, English actor Claude Rains, German actor Conrad Veidt, English actor Sydney Greenstreet, and Hungarian actor Peter Lorre; the film is set in the Moroccan city of Casablanca with World War II as its backdrop. A story of love and loyalty, the film, its characters, quotations, and music have all become legendary.

1940's The Philadelphia Story is another 'must-watch' Hollywood classic. A romantic comedy (based on real life socialite Helen Hope Montgomery Scott) about a bride-to-be whose plans suddenly become very complicated. Starring Katharine Hepburn, once labeled as 'box office poison' due to the failure of some previous films, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. This film was a great success and is rated number 44 on the American Film Institutes list of the top 100 movies, and number 15 on the list of the top 100 comedies.

1953 gave us Roman Holiday another romantic comedy/drama directed and produced by William Wyler. Roman Holiday introduced American movie-goers to Audrey Hepburn whose popularity soared with her Oscar winning performance. The film also starred Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert. This is a charming romantic comedy/drama of an overly sheltered Princess on a widely publicized tour of European capitals who meets an American newspaper reporter stationed in Rome.

Last, but certainly not the least, of these few unforgettable movie suggestions is To Catch A Thief, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This film beautifully blends together the three elements of intrigue, romance, and humor. Set in the French Riviera, and based on the 1952 thriller novel by David Dodge, the story centers around a former cat burglers (Cary Grant) endeavors to catch a copy-cat thief who is using his exact techniques thereby causing the police to make him their primary suspect. The film also stars the great Grace Kelly who was to later become Princess Grace of Monaco in 1956.

These recommendations of classic Hollywood movies just scratch the surface of what could be recommended for viewing. No matter what your film preference, the pleasant atmosphere of romantic comedies, the thrills of action and suspense, or a motion picture epic, the Hollywood classics of the 1920's through the 1950's offer something for everyone.

The simplest way to verify provenance is by looking for items that come with a Certificate of Authenticity or a Letter of Authenticity (often abbreviated to COA and LOA). A Certificate of Authenticity is an official document that states that the item was used in a movie or worn by the actor or actress as claimed. The document is usually either signed by a high ranking official or is stamped with the official seal of a company. In the case of movie props and wardrobe, the COA is usually signed or stamped by a movie studio, production company, or the Property Master in charge of a certain film. A Property Master (or Prop Master) is the person in charge of providing or creating all of the props, costumes, and background objects that are to be used in a movie production. Any item that has a dependable COA will have greater value and resell ability. Keep in mind that COAs can also be forged, so ask for pictures of the COA if they are not already provided by the seller. Be wary of items that have shaky provenance with descriptions like "I originally bought this item from a guy at a yard sale who swore it was used in Spider-Man".

*Buy from trusted sellers. There are several companies that deal exclusively with movie props who sell their wares on eBay. For example, Premiere Props and the Prop Store of London are both high profile prop and wardrobe dealers who work directly with the movie studios. Everything they sell comes with a COA and can be guaranteed authentic. In the cases where an independent seller is auctioning an item you are interested in, check their other listings and their feedback. Do they have a history of selling other movie props? Do they have a lot of negative feedback? If they do, do any of the negative comments have to do with unhappy buyers receiving badly damaged, fake, or merchandise that did not arrive as described?

*Try out eBay's Live Auctions. Live Auctions are relatively new on eBay, and provide opportunities for internet users to have access to live events at actual licensed auction houses. Instead of an auction being listed for several days with bids being placed all during that time, a live auction works exactly as if were standing in the room where the auction was taking place. There are many different categories for Live Auctions and there are many opportunities to buy very rare movie props and costumes. For instance, Profiles in History give access to their auctions through the Live Auctions interface. These auctions are generally performed by high profile licensed auction houses, so you can feel certain that what is being described is exactly what you are bidding on. The drawbacks to a live auction are that you have to know when the auction is taking place ahead of time or you can easily miss out, and given the rarity of a lot of the movie memorabilia that is on the block, the starting prices can be in the thousands. Go to http://www.ebayliveauctions.com to keep track of when the next live events will take place.

*Use common sense and ask questions. Don't ever let yourself be blinded with how good a deal appears to be that you don't view an auction with a critical eye. If something appears too good to be true, there's a good possibility that is the case. There's a feature on every eBay auction to ask the seller a question. Use it! If the seller doesn't seem honest or up front with their responses, move on. If pictures are provided, examine the pictures in detail and try to match the movie prop or costume with screenshots from the movie the items were allegedly used in. Some of the more helpful sellers will provide many pictures and even include movie screenshots for comparison. Finally, go with your instincts. If after all is said and done there is still something bothering you about the authenticity of a piece of movie memorabilia up for auction, walk away. There are plenty of good, authentic props available out there.

Greta Garbo - A Legendary Leading Lady By Shawna S. Ruppert There is a short list of the most legendary leading ladies in the history of Hollywood, and one of those which will always be remembered is that of Greta Garbo. Greta Garbo is an important part of the early age of Hollywood, as she was one of those original stars who made the transition from the early silent films into the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in 1905, Garbo was a Swedish actress and would become not only renowned for her beauty, but also for her talent which would be recognized with various honors throughout her lifetime. A first good bit of trivia for any Greta Garbo quiz: her real name wasn't Garbo at all, but was Greta Lovisa Gustafsson. Garbo was one of those tremendously talented actresses of the period who actually had studied acting professionally, as opposed to many film stars who simply seemed to burst into the profession. She studied in her native Sweden at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, (which is where she would also start to go by the name Greta Garbo.) This is where she would meet the director who would give her the first starring role in her film career, in the silent film Gosta Berlings Saga.

It was this role which would catch the eye of legendary Hollywood Mogul Louis B. Mayer, one of the biggest star-makers of the period. It was her performance which caught his eye in the film, and from there he would sign her to MGM.

Could you name any of Garbo's silent films? This would be a great piece of Greta Garbo trivia and would include films like Flesh and the Devil, Love, and The Mysterious Lady. She survived the transition to the era of talking movies, but she loved the silent films, and even appeared in the last silent film ever made by MGM.

The transition to talking movies would prove that Garbo was the real thing, and her performances in all those movies which followed would in fact earn her four Acadamy Award nominations. Do you know what pictures those were for? She was nominated for Anna Christie, Romance, Camille, and Ninotchka, Greta Garbo essentially was finished acting by the end of World War II. She never appeared in any feature films after that time, although she would always be remembered as one of the greatest of her time. Her honors later in life included an Honorary Academy Award, as well as being listed on the American Film Institutes list of the best actresses of all time.
